Previously, we released three big but simple tips on how to make your relationships work. A few more tips below:

4. Choose to be happy.

No one else is responsible for your happiness.

You are one whole person. No other living person is made to complete you.

If you rely on other people for your happiness, then there’s something wrong.

The way you see and treat yourself is how others will see and treat you also. You need a stable relationship with yourself first, before you are able to enter into effective relationships with others.

If you’re happy with yourself, then it would be easier for you to make other people happy as well. Happiness begets happiness.

5. Make Time.

If you are hell bent on sticking to your meeting schedules, or salon appointments, or Friday Club with the girls, then find time to spend with those who matter to you.

Allot blocks of time from your schedule for your loved ones.

Being present during occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, etc) do not count as “making time.” Your presence during these moments goes without saying.

Your time and presence will have a more lasting impact then any material gift.

6. Be CONSISTENT.

Small gestures go a long way.

Be consistent with your actions.

Make them feel that your relationship with them is important and special to you through constant expression and consistent action.

7. Have Accountability.

Accept that we have to work on our relationship as well. It’s not a one-way street.

Accept that they have needs as well, and we are responsible for those needs.

Roles and tasks should be laid out clearly from the beginning, in order to avoid false expectations.

All of us have roles to play. And we should fulfill our responsibilities, no questions asked.

Our relationships should be our biggest investment when everything else is accounted for in the end. A life well lived is that of someone who has touched the lives of so many people through his relationships. Just follow the basic tips above.
